What is Solenoid Valve?

The solenoid valve is electrically controlled and has valve features of the solenoid.  It is an electric coil with a moving ferromagnetic core (plunger) at its center. The plunger closes off to a small orifice in its resting position. When the electric current passes through the coil, it would create a magnetic field.  

These solenoid valves are the most widely used control elements in fluidics. They are used to shut off, release, dose, distribute or mix fluids. For this, they have many applications areas. 

The solenoid works by creating an electromagnetic field around a movable core known as an armature. When it is compelled to move by an electromagnetic field, the motion of that armature opens and closes valves and turns electrical energy into mechanical motion.  There are two main types of solenoid valves- direct-acting and pilot-operated valves. 

Single-Solenoid Valves: In the case of a single solenoid type of valve, if the power is applied to the single “A” solenoid coil, the main spool in the valve shifts causing the valve ports to output air on one side and will cause the pneumatic actuator to extend to a new position.

Double-Solenoid Valves: When it comes to the Double solenoid type, if the voltage is applied to the “A” solenoid coil, the above process will take place.  If the power is applied to the “B” solenoid coil, this valve has 2 solenoids and that is why it is called a double solenoid.
